The Interview
A couple months ago my mother got a call from a reporter from the New Britain Herald. He said that he would like to set up a phone interview with both of us about our experiences with the (then upcoming) National Arts Program 23rd Annual Show Reception. At last year's reception I won "Best in Show" for my pastel "Contemplating the City Life." This year I entered two acrylic paintings, , "Lost" and "Chilly Waters," while my mother entered a photograph. We were both excited about this team interview because this was our first experience with a combined article about the both of us! My mother was a little shy about being interviewed at first, but she became more comfortable as we took turns responding to the journalist's questions on a three-way phone call. The questions ranged from our lives in general to our artwork in the show. The interview was lovely and I enjoyed being in the "art scene" with my mom.
The Article
The full article was published in the New Britain Herald's Saturday, January 25th, 2014 issue. It highlights a total of six artists whose work was also in the show. You can read our feature in the second photograph below. It contains some amusing misunderstandings between ourselves and the journalist: Troy is not our last names, my mother is not a photographer and I never said "abstract and realistic" are mediums. However, I did enjoy how the journalist described our artwork.
The Reception
My mother and her friend attended the show's reception. Unfortunately, neither of us received awards, but it was still an honor to have been one of the 350 people selected out of thousands of entries to display work in this show. I would love to show artwork with my mother again in the future.
